I THINK I CAN        I THINK I CAN         I THINK I CAN

I THINK I CAN

I think I can are words I like to use
They are helpful when I'm trying something new
If I try with all my might
In time I'll get it right
I think I can are words I like to use

WELCOME TO THE WORLD OF PRESCHOOL

This is St. Mary’s fourteenth year of Preschool.  At St. Mary’s School, both the two day and three day programs are designed for 4 and 5 year olds preparing for Kindergarten.  The kindergarten readiness program provides the students with many positive educational opportunities.

The children are introduced to the letters of the alphabet as well as many more curricular areas.  I use a teaching tool named “Harry” to familiarize the children with the alphabet.  Each week Harry introduces several words that begin with the letter of the week.  Projects usually relate to the letter of the week, the Religion lesson, or the theme of the week.  Children have an opportunity to act out stories as they are read or told to them.  They explore the world of science, music, math, language, social studies and computers.  I constantly strive to find new and creative ideas while using many tried and true methods.

St. Mary’s Preschool is Christ-centered and Religion is a very important subject taught in St. Mary’s Preschool.  The children learn the importance of prayer and about Jesus’ love for each of them.  We are constantly talking about all of God’s creation.  There is a lesson in Religion once a week.  The students are involved in a service project during the year as a way to bring Jesus’ love to others.

The program involves a hands-on approach to learning.  Not only must children see, but they also must do, to learn effectively.  As they enter the classroom each day, they have several learning centers from which to choose hands-on activities in addition to a hands-on lesson format.

Each child is unique in his or her own way.  Throughout the year the children’s needs are assessed and lesson plans are adjusted according to these needs.

Again, if you have any questions during your visit, please feel free to ask.  You may also call me anytime at the school, 663-2804.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Questions are frequently asked regarding the following subjects.  I hope you find this page helpful!  If you have questions about anything not covered here please feel free to ask.

CARPOOLS/DAYCARE
Parents are to list everyone who is in their carpool along with the name of drivers and days.  Please send in your child’s folder on the first day.  If your child is attending daycare, please send a list with the days he or she will be going to daycare after class.

NOTIFICATION
Parents must notify us or the school office when a student is going home in some way other than the normal routine or when he or she is going to be absent.  If we are not informed of changes, it may be necessary to detain the student until we hear from the parents.  *If you child is going to Daycare, please write a note listing the days they will be staying there.

FOLDERS
A student is responsible for his or her own take home folder.  They are to follow a two-step instruction upon entering the classroom which includes removing the folder from the book bag and placing it on the desk. Any written communication between home and school should be put inside the folder. (PLEASE allow your child to take care of his or her own responsibilities including putting bags, coats and hats where they belong)

LEADER
Each week a student is “Leader of the Week”.  The children look forward to this responsibility.  It involves leading at circle time, leading the student line at recess, gym and dismissal time and sometimes a few other special duties.  Watch the calendar for your child’s name.  THIS DOES NOT INVOLVE SNACKS.  All responsibilities are taken care of in the classroom.

SHARING
*NOTE CHANGE:  EVERY OTHER Thursday for 2-day and EVERY OTHER Friday for 3-day students.  (Please watch the calendar for your child’s dates) The students are to bring something from home to share with the class that begins with the letter of the week, if possible.  If you cannot find anything that pertains to the letter, you may help your child choose some other item.  No items to pass out to students please

SNACKS
Children may bring a simple snack to share with the class on their birthdays.  Otherwise, snacks are supplied occasionally by the teacher to teach a lesson or to celebrate a special day.

BIRTHDAYS
Student’s birthdays are recognized during the school year.  Summer birthdays are celebrated from November to February as half birthdays. Weekend and Holiday birthdays are celebrated as close to the date as possible.  It is a tremendous help if you notify us of the day you wish to celebrate your child’s day.

DRESS CODE
Students may wear shorts at any time.  When sandals are worn they must have a strap on the back and be worn with socks.  Gym shoes are to be worn on gym days.  This is Tuesdays for the 2-day and Wednesdays for the 3-day.  (These days may change depending on scheduling)

REPORT CARDS
Students do not receive report cards in preschool.  However, there will be a Pre-K Report followed by a scheduled Parent/Teacher conference in November.  In March, there will be an opportunity to request another conference.

INVITATIONS
I ask that students do not pass out party invitations or gifts at school unless the entire class is included.  Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.
